Landscape and Trails

The rural paths around Hueva are suitable for hiking and cycling. The two activities mentioned offer different focal points for your stay: hiking and cycling can be considered separately in your own itinerary or combined.

Culture and History

Hueva’s historical development was shaped by its former affiliation with the Order of Calatrava.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Zarza stands beside Hueva’s main square. Construction of the church may have begun in the 13th or 14th century; its apse, with Romanesque proportions, points to this. The bell tower may date from the 15th century and remains inclined.

The Chapel of Santísimo Cristo de la Fe is a Baroque building from the 17th century.

The Rollo, or Picota, of Hueva stands in the Plaza de Melchor López Jiménez. The Rollo was erected in the 15th century and has four concentric steps made of rustic stone. It originally served as a pillory, where people who had committed minor offences were publicly exposed to shame.

The ruins of Hueva Castle lie on a small hill overlooking the plateau on which Hueva is situated.

Festivals and Traditions

The celebrations in honour of Santísimo Cristo de la Fe take place on 14 September. They are preceded by a nine-day novena from 5 to 13 September; a traditional procession follows on the afternoon of 14 September.

These celebrations include a bonfire in the Plaza de Melchor López Jiménez, as well as an invitation from the Brotherhood of Santísimo Cristo de la Fe de Hueva to enjoy rosquillas and lemonade.

In honour of San Isidro Labrador, a procession passes through the streets of Hueva to the fields, where they are blessed. For your itinerary, landscape, culture and festival dates can be treated as separate focal points.
