Discover Caspueñas: Trails, Culture and River Landscape

Caspueñas combines trails through the valley landscape with a village centre where history is visible in the church, washhouse and preserved buildings. By the river, a public park complements the protected landscape of the Valle del Río Ungría. Hiking, local history and nature thus emerge as different facets of the same place.

Hiking

The “Fuentes y Lavaderos del Ungría” circular route is 12.6 kilometres long and connects Caspueñas on the valley floor with Valdeavellano and Atanzón on the slopes. It can be started in Caspueñas and leads via Valdeavellano and Atanzón back to Caspueñas. This means that its course can be understood not only through its total length, but also through its connection between the valley floor and the slopes.

The Caspueñas–Valdeavellano section of the same route is 4.5 kilometres long. Together with the complete circular route, this provides route-length information of different extents within the same trail. When planning a day of hiking, you can consider these two distances separately without losing sight of the route and its sequence of villages.

The RCGU-39 route also passes through Caspueñas and follows the signposted “Ruta del río Ungría”. It takes approximately four to five hours. The “Fuentes y Lavaderos del Ungría” circular route and the RCGU-39 therefore focus on different aspects: one can be understood through connected villages and landscape forms, while the other is defined by a signposted route and its duration.

Culture and History

Caspueñas parish church stands on the main square; it dates from 1624. Just behind the main square, there is a covered washhouse behind a metal gate.

The village centre also contains one of the information boards for the hiking trails in the Valle del Río Ungría. Caspueñas has been documented in records since the Middle Ages; preserved stone houses and traditional agricultural buildings complement this historical connection. The village’s history can therefore be encountered both in written records and in its visible architectural forms.

Nature

Caspueñas lies within the protected landscape area of the “Valle del Río Ungría”. By the river, there is a shady public park with children’s swings and picnic tables. The Fuente de la Canaleja is located in the park. The landscape area, river and park thus form a distinct local point of reference alongside the hiking trails and historic centre; the spring is an additionally named destination within this river landscape.
