Castillo del Pobo de Dueñas offers a view into the town’s medieval history: the fortress formed part of the defensive system of the Señorío de Molina. Remains of the old town fortifications have also been preserved beside it.

Culture

The parish church of San Juan Bautista is part of El Pobo de Dueñas’s monumental heritage. The present parish church was built in the 16th century and extensively remodelled in the 17th and 20th centuries. Its distinctive portal features an arch and archivolts decorated with balls and rosettes. Inside there is a polychrome recumbent sculpture of Don García Gil Manrique.

The Museo Etnológico de El Pobo de Dueñas is a small museum in the lower rooms of the town hall. It displays around 200 objects: agricultural equipment and utensils, machines, tools used in traditional occupations, weights and measures, household items, clothing, and old photographs of the town and its inhabitants. The ethnographic museum also has a small palaeontological section where visitors can see fossils.

Landscape and Paths

The landscape around El Pobo de Dueñas is characterised by vast parameras and open fields. Traditional paths around El Pobo de Dueñas allow walks through a steppe landscape. The vast parameras and open fields differ markedly from the enclosed spaces of the church and town hall. For personal planning, the cultural attractions and open landscapes can be given separate consideration.

Historical Traces and Context

El Pobo de Dueñas lies on a natural transition between Molina de Aragón and the Jiloca Depression. At Torre de la Herreruela in the La Herreruela area, the remains of a defensive tower have been preserved; it probably formed part of a defensive belt between the territories ruled by Castile and Aragon. The area around El Pobo de Dueñas is known for fossilised colonial organisms called graptolites.

Routes and Planning

The Camino del Cid passes through El Pobo de Dueñas; the Las Tres Taifas route is designated there as a cycling route. Hiking and cycling follow a different rhythm from visiting the church and museum and can be considered separately when planning a personal trip.
