Aldeanueva de Guadalajara is nestled in the landscape of the Campiña del Henares and surrounded by grain fields and gentle hills. North of the town, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción stands on a steep gorge, in whose valley the Matayeguas stream flows. This location is interpreted as an indication that the temple also served a defensive function.

Landscape and Paths

The agricultural paths around Aldeanueva de Guadalajara are suitable for walks and offer wide views over the Vega and the surrounding hills. The proximity of the Río Henares and the city of Guadalajara makes it possible to combine a visit with cultural and nature trails through the Henares Valley.

Thirty old shepherds’ huts have been preserved on the plains of the municipality between the Torija/Valdenoches and Matayeguas streams. They were built by shepherds to make their lives easier and provide protection from bad weather and the summer sun.

Culture

The Museo El Granero is located at Plaza Mayor 1 in Aldeanueva de Guadalajara. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 14:00, admission is free; visits outside these hours can be arranged by telephone at 625 868 048.

The Museo Etnográfico El Granero is housed in a municipal building made available by the municipality and contains a collection of musical instruments.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a parish church housed in a 13th-century building in the Romanesque-Mudejar style. It has a single-nave layout and a semicircular apse; the sacristy, portico and tower were added in the 16th century.

From the former parish cemetery next to the church, a small wall, three stone crosses arranged in a row and an entrance from the church building have been preserved. The restoration of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción received a European award in 1973.

Townscape and History

Aldeanueva de Guadalajara belongs to the historic area of the Campiña guadalajareña, which was reorganised following the medieval Castilian repopulation. Traditional houses made of rubble masonry are still part of the townscape. The agricultural buildings reflect an economy that was historically associated with dry farming.

Paths to Historic Sites

A granite Stations of the Cross with stone stations connects the parish church with the Ermita de la Virgen de la Soledad. The Camino del Calvario begins at the western wall of the main church and leads to the Ermita de la Soledad.

The Ermita de la Soledad has a monumental cross with carved inscriptions. This cross was made in 1784 and financed by Miguel Vicente, who lived in Madrid at the time and originally came from Aldeanueva.
