Culture

The Picota de Algora dates from the 18th century and is made of sandstone. In the parish church, the single-nave interior is divided into three bays. Ribbed cross vaults with crosses and medallions shape the design of the church interior. Another notable religious building is the Ermita del Cristo del Humilladero, which stands beside the Fuente del Cristo. Due to its Romanesque construction, it appears to have been completed at the end of the 12th century.

The town's political history also dates back a long way: in the 11th century, Algora was initially one of the villages belonging to the House of Medinaceli, later passed to the House of Infantado and received the Villazgo privilege during the reign of Charles III. Algora I is among the historical terrain traces. The approximately 2.3-kilometre-long trench section runs from the El Tomillar area southeastwards to the Llanos de Venarejo, where it ends at the gorge of the Arroyo del Tejar. Numerous firing positions and rear shelters with stone parapets can be found along the line. The remains mark positions facing the Italian CTV troops at their initial areas, which were overrun on the first day of the offensive.

Algora II consists of three structures dug into the slope of a hill. The northernmost structure has a double wall at its centrally accessible entrance and can be entered. The three structures extend over 50 metres, with irregular distances between them.

Nature

Algora is one of the municipalities in which the Barranco del Dulce ZEC-ZEPA area ES0000166 is located. This ZEC-ZEPA area corresponds to the Barranco del Río Dulce Nature Park. Another special feature is the vertebrate palaeontological site in Algora, considered the first true Cenomanian vertebrate site in southwestern Europe. At the karstic palaeontological site TM049, a rich vertebrate fauna from the late Miocene (Ventian, MN13) of great palaeontological and biostratigraphic interest was found.

From the town of Algora, a path leads southwestwards, almost parallel to the motorway, to the quarries at site TM049; they are slightly less than 2 kilometres from the town. The quarry may only be visited with permission from the owning company. The route and the permission requirement are therefore specific details concerning this site.

Routes and Festivals

Algora's patron saint festivities coincide with the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in mid-August. They include a mass in honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and a procession. Public dances, sporting activities and traditional games are also on the programme.

Two differently designed routes are available for active days: the Algora–Baides route is 17.39 kilometres long, has 212 metres of elevation gain and is of medium difficulty. The circular Algora–La Cabrera and Lavender Fields route measures 14.20 kilometres and is intended for outings in summer. The different lengths, elevation profile, difficulty level and seasonal focus provide different points of reference for planning your day.
