Bustares at Pico Ocejón – Hiking Trails, Culture and Holiday Apartments

Bustares lies on the northern slope of Pico Ocejón and within the protected Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Nature Park. Along the route, the trail follows the Río Cristóbal and crosses it three times. Bridges made of gneiss and slate slabs span the river for this purpose. Along the way, the trail offers views of the Sierra del Alto Rey and the peaks of Mojón Cimero and Santotis.

Culture and Architectural History

Bustares preserves traditional mountain architecture built largely from stone and slate. The Iglesia de San Lorenzo is the parish church of Bustares and the municipality’s most important historical landmark. As a rural Romanesque church, it dates from the 13th century; its entrance portico is the most distinctive surviving element of its original Romanesque style.

The masonry of the Iglesia de San Lorenzo consists mainly of gneiss. Quartzite and slate were also used, while limestone appears at the corners and on the portico. Pilgrimage and Festive Days

Bustares’ patron saint festivities in honor of San Lorenzo take place on August 10. The Romería del Santo Alto Rey de la Majestad is held on the first Saturday in September at the summit of Alto Rey, at an altitude of 1,852 meters. Bustares is one of the villages in the Serranía whose pilgrims climb to the pilgrimage chapel on Alto Rey with processional crosses and red flags.

The pilgrimage chapel on Alto Rey is reached via Bustares, followed by a narrow uphill road and a path that leads close to the chapel.
