Tamajón – Karst Landscape, Hiking Trails and Holiday Apartment

Tamajón lies within the boundaries of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Nature Park. The Ciudad Encantada de Tamajón is a karst landscape of limestone formations shaped by differential erosion.

Nature and Landscape

There is a free parking area next to the entrance to the Ciudad Encantada de Tamajón. The Laguna de Tamajón is a place to rest, offering extensive views of Pico Ocejón.

Hiking and Cycling

The Antiguo camino de Tamajón a Retiendas begins in the town centre of Tamajón. One stage of the GR-60 long-distance hiking trail to Campillo de Ranas begins in Tamajón. The Tamajón–Muriel–Peñamira route begins in Tamajón and reaches the Laguna de Tamajón early on. The Camino del Arcipreste ends at a small monolith commemorating the Arcipreste de Hita.

The La Pequeña Ciudad Encantada route begins and ends in Tamajón and leads to the unusual rock formation of the same name. The PR-GU 03 Camino del Arcipreste is connected to Tamajón and is listed as being 13 km long. The BTT-3 mountain biking route “Tamajón–Almiruete” is 14 km long. Stage 2 of the GR-10 “Tamajón–Retiendas–Valdesotos” is listed in connection with Tamajón and as being 12 km long.

Culture and Geology

CIPAT is divided into three thematic areas: palaeontology, archaeology and geology, with a focus on La Piedra de Tamajón. It offers guided interpretive walks through the surroundings of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Nature Park; the routes are easy and take approximately two hours. The CIPAT building is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has parking facilities for cars, buses, motorcycles and bicycles.

The parish church Iglesia Parroquial de Nª Sª de la Asunción is a Romanesque building from the 13th century with rib vaults, a tower and the 17th-century Chapel of Montúfar. The Ermita de Nª Sª de los Enebrales is a 16th-century chapel with a portico that was extended in the Renaissance style in the 18th century. The Mercado Medieval de Tamajón takes place every year and has already been held more than twenty times.

Getting There

Tamajón is 49 km from Guadalajara; the route leads via the CM-101 to Fontanar and Humanes, followed by the CM-1004 to Tamajón.
