Orea in Alto Tajo Nature Park – Nature, Culture and Routes

Orea lies in the southeast of Alto Tajo Nature Park and is part of the park. The Callejones de Peñas Rubias are a rock formation created by erosion and the weathering and shaping of the rock. The Río de Piedras is a collection of thousands of angular quartzite blocks covering the slope of Cerro de San Cristóbal.

Nature and Geology

The lagoon and its surroundings are home to a great variety of amphibians and mammals, including deer. A specimen of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is 23 metres tall and has a circumference of 3.85 metres at its base. The altitude, together with the clarity and purity of the skies, makes a location in Orea suitable for astronomical observations. Routes and Tours

Georoute 9: Sierra de Orea runs along the southeastern end of the Sierra de Orea. The entire route can be completed by bicycle; the stated duration is five hours. Orea is also included in the Las Tres Taifas routes of the Camino del Cid, which include gravel cycling, hiking, cycling tours, mountain biking and motorised tours. A route of more than 300 kilometres passes through Orea into Alto Tajo Nature Park. The five-hour Georoute and the route of more than 300 kilometres represent different scales that you can compare when planning.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de la Asunción is a 17th-century church built of reddish ashlar masonry. Casa Grande is a traditional house in the Molinian style with a family coat of arms. In the 17th century, during the reign of Philip IV, an ironworks with a factory was built due to the mineral resources; it mainly produced iron balls for artillery.

Traditions and Insights

Orea’s patron saint festival is celebrated from 7 to 11 September in honour of its patron saint, the Virgen de la Asunción, and Saint Roch. The festival includes the La Reverencia de los Cargos ceremony.

The Centro de Interpretación El Sequero de Orea is located in a restored historic building that formerly served as the municipality’s forestry drying house. The main exhibition covers traditional uses of Alto Tajo: forestry, charcoal production, resin extraction, beekeeping, extensive farming and livestock breeding, hunting, fishing, lime extraction, and mushroom gathering. The centre provides visitors with information about signposted routes, recreation areas, park regulations, and available activities and services.
