Discover Cantalojas: Nature, Trails and Traditions

The Hayedo de Tejera Negra, one of the southernmost beech forests in Europe, lies within the municipality of Cantalojas. It is part of the beech forests recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage sites.

Nature and Landscape

The visitor centre for Hayedo de Tejera Negra is located 2 kilometres from Cantalojas. The Senda Ecológica de Carretas begins at the Lillas River and is designed as an educational trail.

The Senda Ecológica de Carretas includes a viewpoint at Pradera de Matarredonda and traditional charcoal kilns. The Senda del Robledal in Cantalojas begins at the visitor centre and does not require a reservation; the 17.82-kilometre circular route has a moderate difficulty level. Its forest sections pass through stands of Scots pine, oak and beech.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

Variant 2 of the GR 167.2 from Cantalojas to the Río Sorbe is an operational, 4.12-kilometre linear trail with a low difficulty level. It follows the Sorbe trail towards Valverde de los Arroyos and descends to the Río Sorbe. The Cantalojas–Molino de la Malecilla–Castillo de Diempures circular route begins in the centre of Cantalojas. Castillo de Diempures serves as a natural viewpoint over the upper Sorbe Valley.

The Senda de Carretas is a 6.5-kilometre circular route. The Ruta del río Zarzas is a signposted, 21-kilometre circular route suitable for mountain bikes. The Ruta BTT Río Zarzas begins at the visitor centre of the nature park. The different trail types, lengths and activities make it easier to compare options for your own planning.

In Cantalojas, the route formats and designated uses are presented side by side: a linear section, several circular routes, an educational trail and a mountain-bike route represent different trail types. Length, difficulty and activity can therefore be considered separately; this means that the descent to the Río Sorbe, the forest trails and the signposted mountain-bike route are not combined into a single tour.

Culture and Traditions

Cantalojas has a traditionally influenced townscape with paved streets, houses made of stone and slate, and a rural historic centre. The parish church of San Julián is a 17th-century building with some Romanesque elements. Castillo de Diempures once controlled passage through the Río Sorbe valley.

The Feria de Ganado de Cantalojas takes place every year on 12 October; livestock are exhibited and competitions are held there. The fair has been held since 1948.

Cantalojazz was founded in Cantalojas in 2005; the 18th edition included two days of jazz concerts. Los Cencerrones is a pastoral Christmas tradition revived ten years ago.
