Culture and history

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Olmos dates back to a small rectangular chapel that already existed in 1243 and was founded by the Order of Santiago. The Casa de la Tercia is a representative historic building made of dressed stone; it features a coat of arms of Charles V carved in stone and five arches resting on square pillars. The historic organ of Torre de Juan Abad was built by Gaspar de la Redonda in 1763 and has been completely preserved in its original condition. The International Cycle of Historic Organ Concerts in the parish church began in 2001. The former Casa de Don Fernando houses the Centro Internacional de Humor Gráfico, which displays a collection of more than 200 humour-related works. The Fábrica de Cerámica de Santa Bárbara is a 19th-century industrial building with a central kiln and chimney, as well as an example of traditional industrial architecture.

Nature and trails

The area around the four-arched bridge over the Jabalón River offers opportunities for walking and experiencing the peaceful landscape of La Mancha. The GR 164 Cañada Real Conquense, also known as Cañada Real de los Serranos, is 132 km long in total, divided into six sections, and passes through, among other places, Socuéllamos, Ruidera, Lagunas de Ruidera, Argamasilla de Alba, Valdepeñas, Torrenueva, Torre de Juan Abad and Castellar de Santiago. The local Templarios y molinos de agua route is 10 km long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The Embalse de La Cabezuela offers opportunities for fishing and day trips into the surrounding area. At 1,155 metres, Cabeza del Buey is the highest point in the comarca; a walk there offers views of the landscape within the municipality of Torre De Juan Abad. Festivals and cuisine

On 17 January, the tradition in honour of San Antón includes a popular Luminaria, where residents gather for a meal prepared together over the fire. The pilgrimage to San Isidro takes place on 15 May at the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Vega and includes Rosquillos de sartén, games and competitions for participants. Traditional cuisine in Torre De Juan Abad includes Caldereta, lamb chops, goat meat and game dishes; hare and rabbit meat are used to prepare Galianos. Local cooks prepare Mostillo, quince paste and Rosquillos de sartén for San Isidro and other festivals.
