Llanos del Caudillo: Canals, Caves and Festivals

Llanos del Caudillo is one of nine colonization villages founded by the Instituto Nacional de Colonización (INC) in the province of Ciudad Real. The Parque el Lago is located in the village, a landscaped park with an artificial lake, walking areas and picnic areas.

Culture and History

In the municipality of Llanos del Caudillo, underground Quintería caves of the “bajo rasante” type have been preserved at the forest nursery grounds located north of the village. They are classified as an asset of special cultural interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). The Quintería caves recreate traditional agricultural huts beneath the surface of the ground. Two of these caves have been preserved at the forest nursery grounds; both retain the traditional layout, with access via a Cañada, a kitchen at the rear with a smoke vent, a side stable and, in some cases, small adjoining rooms. Traditionally, they were excavated by agricultural workers and smallholders on public holidays or during periods of bad weather.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Llanos is the most representative building in the village centre and is open in the mornings. It houses an altarpiece with Marian images by Suárez; stained-glass windows designed by Valdivieso depict the Ave Maria in Latin. Its architecture reflects the simple and functional aesthetic of the colonization villages.

Landscape and Trails

The Paseo de las Acequias was created in the 1950s during the colonization of the irrigated area of La Mancha. Today, the irrigation canals are a landscape and ecological attraction that gives Llanos del Caudillo its distinctive character. The Paseo de las Acequias is a nature trail running along the irrigation canals of Llanos del Caudillo; dense vegetation, poplars and water basins line the canals.

Its network of paths connects the village centre with the cultivated areas and runs alongside irrigation canals, wells, water basins and distributors. Lush vegetation with mulberry trees and other trees creates a green microclimate and provides a refuge for various animals. Walking along the Paseo de las Acequias, visitors can observe traditional structures associated with the use of groundwater. Around Llanos del Caudillo, there are agricultural paths that can be used for walking and cycling. The Paseo de las Acequias can be reached via the A-4 at kilometre 160 or via the CR-P-1513 road.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The patron-saint festivities in honour of Our Lady of Los Llanos take place from 7 to 11 September; the feast day is 8 September. The programme includes religious and cultural events as well as music. The patron-saint festivities include a Comida Popular prepared by local residents, which visitors from outside the village can also attend.

The Comida Popular menu includes pork with tomatoes and a veal stew. During the patron-saint festivities, Vaquillas take place at the Auditorio de usos múltiples. San Isidro Labrador is celebrated on 15 May with traditional activities and a festive atmosphere connected with agricultural traditions. The celebrations in Llanos del Caudillo include a tasting of Piel-de-Sapo melons.
