Fuencaliente: Rock Art, History and Starry Skies

Fuencaliente is located in the Parque Natural del Valle de Alcudia y Sierra Madrona. Fuencaliente has eleven rock art sites, six of which have been enhanced and are open to the public.

Culture

The Centro de Interpretación del Arte Rupestre presents the history of the Fuencaliente area, which has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and addresses the historical importance of metal and mining. The municipal area is also home to the Roman settlement and smelting centre of Valderrepisa from the Republican period, that is, from the 2nd–1st centuries BC.

Peña Escrita is an archaeological site that has been designated an archaeological zone since 1974 and features schematic rock paintings. The Cueva de la Batanera is an open-air rock shelter accessible to visitors, with schematic rock paintings dating from the period between the Chalcolithic and the Bronze Age.

The Iglesia Parroquial Ntra. Sra. de los Baños is also part of the town's history. The church, which is open to visitors, dates from the 18th century and was built over a thermal spring.

The cultural attractions offer different approaches: the interpretation centre contextualises the history of the area and the importance of metal and mining, while Peña Escrita, the Cueva de la Batanera and Valderrepisa identify specific archaeological sites in the municipal area. Rock paintings, a Roman settlement and smelting site, and an 18th-century church therefore stand alongside one another as distinct focal points.

Nature

The Mirador Astronómico on the way to the Monumento de Peña Escrita provides an opportunity to observe the sky without light pollution. As a Starlight Destination, Fuencaliente offers special astrotourism activities during the summer months.

The surroundings of the Microrreserva Refugios de Quirópteros are freely accessible; the bats' breeding sites must not be entered. This provides clearly distinct themes for planning daytime and evening activities: archaeological sites, protected natural areas and views of the sky.

The available features differ when choosing between the nature-related themes: the astronomical viewpoint directs attention to the sky, the summer astrotourism activities mark a seasonal focus, and the Microrreserva combines time outdoors with the requirement not to enter the bats' breeding sites. The nature and cultural themes therefore remain clearly separate.

Cuisine

Fuencaliente's cuisine is based largely on game dishes, such as wild boar, venison and roe deer, often served with local mushrooms.

During Candelaria, locals and visitors gather around large bonfires; a migas competition is also held.

Other places at this level are Solana Del Pino, Valdepeñas, Manzanares, Torre De Juan Abad, Cózar, Cinco Casas, Argamasilla De Calatrava and El Robledo.

To visit the Yacimiento romano de Valderrepisa, the key must be collected from the Oficina de Turismo in Fuencaliente.
