Cinco Casas: History, Romería and Winery

Cinco Casas originated in the mid-19th century as a railway station on the railway line between Alcázar de San Juan and Manzanares. In the 1950s, Cinco Casas was established as a new village within La Mancha’s irrigated area as part of an agricultural colonization program. The architect of Cinco Casas was Pedro Castañeda Cagigas.

Culture

At Cinco Casas railway station, train arrivals from Alcázar de San Juan, Jaén, Madrid Chamartín Clara Campoamor and Ciudad Real are listed. A special historical episode links the station to the total solar eclipse of 28 May 1900: the Cinco Casas railway station, which was still called Argamasilla at the time, was one of the preferred observation sites for the celestial event. Astronomers stayed at the temporary observatory in Cinco Casas, which at the time belonged to Argamasilla station, to study the 1900 solar eclipse. The writer Azorín also got off at Cinco Casas railway station at the beginning of the 20th century to travel through the landscapes of Don Quixote.

Festivals and Events

To celebrate San Isidro, the saint is taken to the Ermita del Pinar del Silo; this is followed by an all-day Romería. The San Isidro Romería usually takes place on the Sunday closest to 15 May and includes gastronomic competitions and tastings. The patron saint’s festival in honor of the Virgen de las Nieves is celebrated on 5 August and includes activities for all age groups. The 2026 patron saint celebrations in Cinco Casas in honor of Nuestra Señora Virgen de las Nieves began with a traditional procession led by the Charanga Metálica.

The 2026 carnival program included a masked event with an afternoon snack for children and older people, during which chocolate-covered Tortas were distributed. The traditional Entierro de la Sardina was also part of the program; this was followed by a communal gathering with grilled sardines and meat, to which everyone interested was invited. The 2026 carnival also featured a Comparsas procession with high participation from the local population.

The bullring of Cinco Casas hosted a practical event of the VI. Certamen Taurino “Tierra del Quijote” as part of the local Ferias and Fiestas. The “Tierra del Quijote” competition reached its sixth edition; Cinco Casas was the second stop in this edition.

Cuisine and Landscape

The Bodega Virgen de las Nieves is more than a century old and is located in the historic part of Cinco Casas. The bodega’s cave was dug by hand and carved into the rock; it is more than 120 meters long and approximately 6 meters wide. Cinco Casas’s horticultural products include melons and peppers. In addition to melons and peppers, grapevines, olive trees and cereals are also cultivated in the area around Cinco Casas. On 9 November 2024, one of the tourist wine routes passed through Cinco Casas and ended at 11 a.m. with a gastronomic tasting at Bodega Vintopía.
