Wine tourism in Valdepeñas includes guided tours of historic wineries and vineyards, tastings, and workshops focusing on the wines with their own Denominación de Origen. The Wine Museum presents the development of viticulture and winemaking in an educational and interactive exhibition and preserves original elements such as presses, a winery with clay vessels and a cave.
Wine and Culture
La Bodega de las Estrellas is a traditional family winery within the urban area of Valdepeñas, with courtyards, clay vessels and a cave, and offers wine tourism accompanied by the producers. At La Antigua Bodega Los Llanos, visitors can explore the original cave, whose network consists of galleries carved into limestone.
History and Art
La Asunción de Nuestra Señora was originally built at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century as part of the fortress of the Knights of Calatrava. The Iglesia Trinitarios is a Classicist-Baroque church built between 1615 and 1632. The Fundación Gregorio Prieto is housed in an early-18th-century mansion and preserves more than 5,000 works. The artist’s works in photography, drawing, collage, graphic art and painting are displayed in rotating exhibitions.
At the Museo de los Molinos y Ciudad de Valdepeñas, the ground floor displays Gregorio Prieto’s works on the mills. The upper floor traces the history of Valdepeñas through the documentary collection of Eusebio Vasco. The Museo Municipal houses 32 clay vessels. The various museum spaces thus combine art, local history, crafts and material evidence.
Archaeology and Nature
The Cerro de las Cabezas archaeological site reveals areas of the urban and defensive structures of the Iberian city, including urban planning, warehouses, domestic areas, sanctuaries, towers and walls. The site can be visited along a designated route through areas that have already been restored. The facilities built at the Centro de Interpretación Cerro de las Cabezas enable numerous cultural, academic and leisure activities.
The Centro de Interpretación Baños del Peral explains the water’s medicinal mineral properties and houses a permanent exhibition on the importance of the baths in the comarca. Archaeology and bathing culture therefore provide distinct focal points alongside the wine and art offerings.
