Culture

The Museo de Ciudad Real presents archaeological and palaeontological collections. The archaeological exhibition spans the Lower Palaeolithic to the foundation of the city in the Middle Ages. Religious art from the province of Ciudad Real dating from the 12th to the 20th century is displayed at the Museo Diocesano. The Museo del Quijote–Biblioteca Cervantina combines exhibitions of artworks related to Cervantes’ novel with modern multimedia presentations; it also includes a specialised library and a study centre dedicated to the life and work of Cervantes. The Museo Municipal López-Villaseñor displays works by the painter Manuel López-Villaseñor, who was born in Ciudad Real, in thirteen rooms.

The Iglesia de San Pedro is a Gothic church dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Puerta de Toledo is the only surviving gate of Ciudad Real’s former fortifications and was declared a national monument in 1915. The Parque Arqueológico Alarcos-Calatrava is located within the municipality. The archaeological park includes an Iberian oppidum, a medieval town and the site of the Battle of Alarcos.
