Puebla de Don Rodrigo: Nature, Trails and Culture between the Guadiana and the Montes de Toledo

Puebla de Don Rodrigo lies between the Guadiana Valley and the Montes de Toledo. The municipality is set in a landscape of gentle relief and dense Mediterranean vegetation.

Nature

The Abedular de Riofrío is a relict birch forest in the municipality of Puebla de Don Rodrigo. The forest lies at the unusually low altitude of 630 metres and stretches for around three kilometres along the Frío River.

Along the river, the Camino Natural del Guadiana offers close-up views of floating colonies of white water lilies (Nymphaea alba). Another natural area is the Bonales de la Puebla de Don Rodrigo, one of the town’s most significant wetland areas, covering almost 65 hectares. A strong inflow of groundwater creates bulges in the peat bogs and shapes a unique landscape.

The Roble Milenario stands in the Garganta de los Membrillos, a section of the Valtriguero natural area. It grows in a shady forest of centuries-old oak trees beside a pond, is more than 30 metres tall and is estimated to be around 500 years old.

Trails

The Ruta del Abedular de Riofrio – Ruta larga is a 6-kilometre, two-hour circular trail of low difficulty in Puebla de Don Rodrigo. It passes through the Riofrio pine forest to the start of the interpretive birch forest trail.

Stage 15 of the Camino Natural del Guadiana begins on the outskirts of Puebla de Don Rodrigo and follows the river to the Refugio de Valhondillo. The Mirador Castilnegro is located on the summit of Monte Castilnegro and is frequently visited by hikers and cyclists.

The route to the Estrecho de las Hoces begins at the Plaza Mayor in Puebla de Don Rodrigo. It follows the Camino de Villarta along a paved route towards the gorge beside the Guadiana River. The circular trail, river stage, viewpoint and gorge route thus represent different ways of getting around and can be compared when planning your own day.

The Bonales de la Puebla de Don Rodrigo can be accessed from the N-430 towards Badajoz via the same route that leads to the Arroyo de Valtriguero. The waterfall at the Mirador Peñones del Chorro is more than 30 metres high and has a special pool called the “Pileta del Chorro”.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built in the 15th century and is considered the only monumental remnant of earlier periods in Puebla de Don Rodrigo. On the outskirts stands the Puente de Retama, an example of industrial architecture from the late 19th century.

San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers, is traditionally celebrated in Puebla de Don Rodrigo on 15 May. The country festival includes numerous activities. Santa Quiteria, the patron saint of Puebla de Don Rodrigo, is celebrated there on 22 and 23 May.
