Culture and History

Santo Voto has been celebrated in Puertollano since 1348. The festival is of regional tourist interest and is recognised as Bien de Interés Cultural.

Puertollano developed as a permanent settlement around the original church at the site of the Iglesia de la Asunción. Construction of the present-day Iglesia de la Asunción began in the 16th century; materials from the earlier temple were reused in the process. The church has two portals: the Puerta del Sol and the Puerta del Norte, both featuring Renaissance reliefs.

In the centre of Puertollano is the Museo Municipal Cristina García Rodero. It is dedicated to presenting the work of Cristina García Rodero and serves as a meeting place for contemporary photography. The PR-CR 56 circular hiking trail begins at the Museo de la Minería in Parque Pozo Norte in Puertollano. The Experiencia Hullera hiking route passes through the Puertollano coal basin and conveys its mining past, preserved mining heritage and the landscape shaped by mining.
