Discover Porzuna: Volcanic Landscapes and Culture

Right next to Porzuna’s town centre lies the Monumento Natural Volcán del Cerro de los Santos. This natural area is free to access and open year-round. As a monogenetic volcano, it was formed by a single eruption; its cone consists of black volcanic scoria, partly reddish in colour. The most direct ascent follows the path to the Ermita de San Isidro, which climbs from the road between Porzuna and the district of Las Casas del Río to the summit.

Nature and Trails

The Río Bullaque flows through the municipality of Porzuna and shapes landscapes with diverse flora and fauna. Part of the area lies within the LIC and ZEPA Ríos de la Cuenca Media del Guadiana y Laderas Vertientes; Porzuna is also considered an important area for Spanish imperial eagles, vultures, storks and lynx. The signposted PR-CR11 hiking trail runs for 20 km between Porzuna and Alcolea de Calatrava, in both directions, passing through volcanic features and landscapes.

Culture and History

The Museo Arqueológico de Porzuna is located at Calle Toledo 28, next to the Casa de la Cultura. It covers approximately 140 m² and extends over two floors. The basement displays Porzuna’s origins in the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic, as well as Acheulean and Mousterian hand axes, cleavers and scrapers. Schools, institutes and associations can also visit the museum outside regular opening hours by prior appointment.

The Museo Etnográfico de Porzuna is housed in the municipality’s former silo and displays traditional objects, tools and household items that illustrate rural life in Porzuna and its surroundings.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián Mártir dates from the 18th century and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1993. Reddish volcanic stone, Gothic architecture and an intricately crafted wooden choir define the building; it can be visited subject to religious service times.

Traditions and Cuisine

The Titanes installation The Pillar of Unified Love by Nychos depicts a skeleton in Porzuna as a symbol of universal love. The Corpus Christi de Porzuna tradition includes twelve dancers with guitars, lutes, bandurrias and castanets, as well as riders on magnificently decorated horses. It also features the songs “Los Buenos Días” and the Fandango de Porzuna.

Traditional cuisine includes gachas, migas manchegas, Caldereta de cordero, Manchego cheese, pisto manchego, wine from La Mancha, flores manchegas and rosquillas.

Sierra and Historic Sites

The Ermita de la Cruz de Mayo is located in the Sierra de la Cruz de Mayo, which can be reached via a path. The Sierra del Cerrajón contains the remains of a fortified “castro”; Bronze Age ceramics and finds from later cultures have been discovered there. A romería to the Ermita de la Cruz de Mayo is traditionally held on 3 May.
