Argamasilla de Alba: Quixote Culture and Routes Along the Guadiana

In Argamasilla de Alba, the Casa de Medrano is at the heart of an impressive Quixote narrative: it houses a museum dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes, his work, and the historical and literary context of the Spanish Golden Age. At the same time, it is considered one of the most important landmarks on the Ruta del Quijote. The complex includes a two-storey cave that has been largely preserved in its original state and is traditionally identified as Cervantes’ prison.

Culture

The cultural tour of the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista includes the chapel of the Marqueses de Pacheco. The Pósito de la Tercia is now a cultural and exhibition venue. At the Botica de los Académicos, the Académicos de la Argamasilla held their literary discussion evenings devoted to Cervantes. “Quijote en la calle” honours Cervantes’ work through a theatre performance depicting passages and chapters from the Quixote. The area’s traditional cuisine is also represented: Manchego cheese is one of its traditional ingredients.

Landscape

The Castillo de Peñarroya stands on a cliff above the Guadiana, beside the reservoir and dam named after it. Together with the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Peñarroya, located inside the castle, it forms a historic monument classified as a BIC. Argamasilla de Alba also holds the recognition of Destino Turístico Starlight, which acknowledges the quality of the sky and its protection from light pollution. The town is considered a gateway to the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de Ruidera, located further upstream.

Routes and Stages

The Senda Ecológica, also known as the Senda Interpretativa del Castillo de Peñarroya, is a marked walking route of approximately six kilometres for the out-and-back journey along the right bank of the Peñarroya reservoir. The Sendero del Priorato begins at the bridge over the Guadiana on the route of the former railway line, which is now used as a Via Verde, and leads to the Canal del Gran Prior. The GR-114 route also starts at the bridge over the Guadiana in Argamasilla de Alba; it follows the river towards the Castillo de Peñarroya and identifies the Motilla del Retamar as its first stop. The different route formats make it possible to consider short walks and longer stages separately. A seven-stage cycle tour covering 200 kilometres passes through the most famous locations associated with the Quixote and begins and ends in Argamasilla de Alba.

History and Local Life

The Motilla del Retamar lies in the bed of the Guadiana River. Fortified settlements of this kind played an important role in the management and control of economic resources during the Bronze Age. An ex-voto of Don Rodrigo de Pacheco is dated to 1601. On 16 January 2025, Argamasilla de Alba celebrated the San Antón festival with fire, music and neighbours gathering together; bonfires were lit simultaneously at the Recinto Ferial and at the Plaza de la Constitución in front of the Ermita de San Antón.
