Nature

The Tablas de Daimiel are formed by the confluence of the Cigüela and Guadiana rivers and by the interaction of surface water with groundwater from Aquifer 23. The wetland has the status of a national park, a biosphere reserve, a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and a ZEPA special protection area for birds.

Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park has a permanent exhibition, guided tours, a screening room and environmental education activities; several wildlife observation points are located along the visitor trails. Three self-guided walking trails begin at the visitor centre car park in the Tablas de Daimiel area. The Laguna de Navaseca is located approximately 2 km from Daimiel, belongs to the lagoon area of the municipality of Daimiel and is part of the Mancha Húmeda Biosphere Reserve. The lagoon near Daimiel has a car park, observation facilities and walking trails and can be visited on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. It is suitable for birdwatching and nature photography; the waterbirds found there include ducks, gulls, coots, purple gallinules, white-headed ducks and flamingos.

History and culture

The Motilla del Azuer is a visitable prehistoric archaeological site from the Bronze Age (2200–1350 BC), located 10 km from Daimiel. It preserves a fortified enclosure with a central tower and three concentric rings of walls. Visits to the Motilla del Azuer near Daimiel always take place with a guide, both for individual visitors and organised groups.

The Museo Comarcal de Daimiel presents a chronological journey from the prehistoric era of the Motilla del Azuer through Iberian, Roman and Hispano-Muslim history to the Renaissance and traditional Manchegan architecture. It includes a reconstruction of the well at the Motilla del Azuer and a traditional fisherman's hut.

Traditions

More than 12,000 members from nine brotherhoods currently take part in Daimiel's Semana Santa processions; the parades combine an Andalusian influence with the sobriety and solemnity of the Castilian-style penitential procession. The culinary tradition of Daimiel's Semana Santa includes chickpea stew, sea bream marinated in escabeche, Spanish omelette, cod with tomato, as well as rosquillas, barquillos, roscautreras, torrijas and flores.

Construction of the Iglesia de Santa María La Mayor began towards the end of the 14th century with significant involvement from the Order of Calatrava; it is a Gothic building. The church houses processional sculptures, including the Baroque Cristo de la Expiración, which are carried in processions during Daimiel's Semana Santa.

Construction of the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol began in 1542; it has a cruciform floor plan with ribbed vaults. The church displays religious artworks by Antonio Castillo Lastrucci and Juan D’Opazo, which are carried in processions during Daimiel's Semana Santa.
