San Carlos del Valle combines Castilian square tradition with a distinctive church building and a variety of themes encompassing history, festivals and landscapes. The Plaza Mayor de San Carlos del Valle was built between 1713 and 1729 as part of the Castilian tradition of arcaded squares with wooden galleries. Its layout is an irregular rectangle. As an ensemble, the Plaza Mayor is 53 metres long and 21 metres wide at its centre; Tuscan columns support the wooden galleries.

Culture and History

The floor of the Plaza Mayor is paved with rounded stones set into large square frames made of regularly cut ashlar stone. Of the entrances originally created by arches, three remain; an additional entrance leads through the Lonjilla. The Plaza Mayor is open to the public and can be visited.

Construction work on the Iglesia del Santísimo Cristo del Valle began on 18 September 1713 and ended on 13 September 1729. The church takes the form of a huge cube with four towers at the corners and a large dome. In 1993, the Iglesia del Santísimo Cristo del Valle was declared a protected cultural heritage site as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. At the corners are four figures that, according to tradition, are considered portraits of the builders. The other façade of the Iglesia del Cristo del Valle contains a Churrigueresque bas-relief depicting Santiago Matamoros.

The Casa Grande de la Hospedería retains a courtyard structure with a corridor and fountain, which can be admired when visiting the Plaza de San Carlos del Valle. The Casa Grande was a former inn where travellers on their way from Andalusia to Castile or vice versa, as well as visitors to the Santo Cristo, stopped to rest or spend the night.
