Discover Ongayo: Routes, Landscape and Church Architecture

Ongayo can be explored via a specific cycling and hiking route: the 38-kilometre Ruta Circular Ciclable de Suances passes through the village. The route is designed for cyclists and hikers and can be downloaded online via the Wikiloc app. This places the route length, mode of transport and digital route information side by side as clearly distinguishable points of reference.

Nature

The landscape around Ongayo is characterised by gentle slopes covered with green meadows. Quiet paths lead from Ongayo to Camplengo and coincide with the route used by pilgrims travelling to Santiago via Santillana del Mar. The Fuente de la Churreta was restored and developed into a leisure and rest area. Open meadow-covered slopes, a historically used route and a specifically designed resting place thus come together in the same local landscape.

Culture

The Los Remedios festival takes place in Ongayo on 2 July. Ongayo Church preserves the only Camarín in this architectural series. In Ongayo Church, the tower stands inside the nave rather than on the gable wall. The festival date therefore complements the church building's permanently visible special features with a cultural occasion held on a specific date each year. Visitors who view the village at different times thus encounter both a fixed date in the annual calendar and architectural details that remain visible independently of the festival.
