Rábago – Panoramic Views, El Soplao and Holiday Apartments

Rábago is a small settlement made up of two sections: one is located alongside the road, while the other lies higher up. The settlement is known for its stone houses, some of which have been renovated. The townscape also includes a distinctive house in the French style. Culture and Townscape

In the centre of Rábago stands the Iglesia de San Ignacio de Loyola. Its structure has a single-nave layout, a straight-ended chancel, a sacristy built onto the Epistle side, and a bell gable at the foot of the building. The Molino de Rábago mill draws water from the River Nansa where it flows through Rábago (Herrerías), and is located on the edge of the CA-181. The building of the Molino de Rábago has been renovated and no longer contains any hydraulic or milling equipment. The church and mill therefore offer different architectural and functional features to consider. In Cantabria, the La Florida mining area is regarded as an important heritage site of industrial mining archaeology.

Nature and Geology

New fossil insect species have been described from the Rábago/El Soplao palaeontological site. The amber deposit of Rábago/El Soplao dates from the Lower Cretaceous and is approximately 110 million years old. It has yielded more than 500 arthropod bioinclusions. Cueva El Soplao features eccentric formations, stalactites, stalagmites, sinter formations, columns, soda straws, and dogtooth formations. Geological topics can be explored here through specific formations, fossils, and the age of the deposit.

The Mirador de Rábago offers 360-degree panoramic views over the landscapes of the Nansa Valley in Herrerías and parts of the neighbouring municipalities of Rionansa and Lamasón. From the Mirador de Rábago, the stark contrast is apparent between the lowlands along the river, characterised by rural landscapes, and the consistently steep mountain edge surrounding the basin of the middle and lower Nansa. Picu Hubón is a rounded summit, a 646-metre-high mountain made of Triassic sandstone and conglomerates. Landscape observation and geological description therefore use different scales: one is the broad view, while the other focuses on rock, shape, and elevation.

Trails and Getting There

The Celucos–Camijanes hiking trail is 13.1 kilometres long and has an estimated minimum duration of three hours. It passes through part of Rábago’s town centre. On the section of the trail between the Palombera dam and Rábago, there is only a narrow road shoulder. Trail length and estimated minimum duration are separate measures that you can consider alongside each other when planning your day. Cueva El Soplao is reached via the turn-off to Puente Nansa before the town centre of Pesués; from there, continue to Rábago and follow the road to the cave.
