Culture and Historic Houses

The present-day Iglesia Parroquial de San Bartolomé was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the Barrio de la Torre, replacing the former, now vanished church of San Bartolomé de Vedía.

The Iglesia de San Bartolomé has a Latin-cross floor plan and a three-storey tower with distinctive typological features. Inside are carved figures of Saint Bartholomew and John the Baptist, dating from the late 16th or early 17th century.

The house of Francisco de Hontañón Riva Cudeyo is the only surviving house in Elechas with a façade made of dressed stone blocks and a coat of arms. It stands in the historic Barrio de Hontanón, now called La Raba, and was built by Francisco de Hontañón Riva Cudeyo. He is said to have built his own chapel and the family residence in the second half of the 17th century.

Villa Paula, dating from the mid-20th century, is the only building of regionalist architecture in the Elechas area. Its tower, articulated on three sides, reflects the Santander architectural style shaped by Rucabado.

Islands and Archaeological Sites

Remains of former oyster and mussel farming facilities, including an auxiliary building, have been preserved on Isla de la Hierba. Isla de Marnay, also called Isla de Los Ratones, is a small island in the inner part of Santander Bay opposite Elechas.

Flint and materials from archaeological sites dating from the Roman and medieval periods were discovered in Cueva de la Isla, also called Cueva de la Campanuca, and its surroundings.
