Quintana: Vacation Rental, Nature and Cultural Heritage

The Ruta Quintana de Toranzo is a circular trail that begins at La Pirurera and passes through the Sierra de Quintana. It includes Atlantic wet heath with Erica ciliaris and Erica tetralix, as well as the ethnographically shaped landscape of the Valle de Toranzo with hay meadows and livestock huts.

Hiking Trails

Another route is called Turba y turberas en la Cuera. It is a 15.2-kilometer circular trail that begins and ends in Quintana de Toranzo and can be completed on foot or by mountain bike. The route begins on the northern edge of Quintana de Toranzo in the direction of Salcedillo; the vehicle is parked near the last houses in the town center.

Quintana is easily accessible by car or a medium-sized bus; there is no public transport. The two trails have different focuses: the Ruta Quintana de Toranzo combines its circular character with its start at La Pirurera and its course through the Sierra and Valle, while Turba y turberas en la Cuera is characterized by its fixed length, two possible modes of transport and the peatland landscape.

Nature

Most of the peat bogs in the Sierra de Quintana are interconnected and form one large continuous system; different types of peat bog occur along the route. The natural features of Quintana de Toranzo also include European dry heaths.

In the first section of the Ruta Quintana de Toranzo, the trail passes through the Cagigal de Salcedillo, a group of ancient, centuries-old oaks listed in the inventory of Cantabria’s unique trees. Atlantic acidophilous beech forests with an understory of holly and occasional yews are also characteristic. The peatland plant “algodón del pantano” has been recorded in Quintana.

The Prao peatland extends along the route over approximately 30 hectares; its exact boundaries are difficult to determine because of changes made in the past. The route also leads to the Linde el Corro peatland, whose central area is relatively well preserved.

Culture and History

Quintana de Toranzo is home to the 18th-century parish church of Santa María Magdalena. The Conjunto Tumular de Quintana de Toranzo comprises burial structures in which deceased members of Chalcolithic and Neolithic communities were buried; some of these structures are more than 25 meters in diameter.

On July 22, 2026, Quintana de Toranzo celebrated a patron saint’s festival in honor of Saint Mary Magdalene. It included a solemn Mass in her honor; a procession carrying the image of Saint Mary Magdalene also proceeded to the Virgen del Carmen hermitage at the entrance to the town.
