Discover Correpoco: Trails, Church Art and Mountain Architecture

Before arriving in Llendemozó, the route from Correpoco to Llendemozó opens up panoramic views over the Saja Valley. The path passes Pico del Cueto, which is 836 metres high, and the hiking route is suitable for every season.

Nature

Correpoco lies on the Argoza River, a tributary of the Saja. The village extends across three small neighbourhoods on a sunny, south-facing slope and preserves examples of Cantabria’s traditional mountain architecture.

Hiking

The route from Correpoco to Llendemozó is a linear trail with a low level of difficulty. The round trip covers 7.30 kilometres and an elevation gain of 30 metres; there is a drinking-water fountain at the starting point in Correpoco. In nearby Llendemozó stands the San Antonio hermitage, a religious building constructed in the 17th century with a polychrome wooden coffered ceiling.

For planning the day, the two types of excursion in Correpoco can be distinguished by trail type, starting point, length, elevation gain and their respective connection with Llendemozó or the rivers. The hiking route provides a linear connection to the neighbouring village, while the MTB route returns to the starting point in Correpoco.

Cycling

The Correpoco–Pozo Arbencias–Correpoco MTB route starts at Correpoco Town Hall and follows an old path in Saja-Besaya Nature Park. It runs along the river to the waterfalls of the Río Hormigas and Río Lodar; Pozo de la Arbencia is located on the Río Lodar. Culture

Correpoco was part of the historic Ruta de los Foramontanos. The Church of San Juan Bautista was built in the 16th century. It has a baptismal font of Romanesque tradition and an original wooden coffered ceiling above the apse. It also contains five altarpieces from the mid-18th century featuring a popular artistic style. The parish church of San Juan Bautista is currently considered a ruin.

The Correpoco humilladero contains a movable stone that could be used to collect alms left by hikers. An 18th-century humilladero on the path near Correpoco served as a refuge for travellers. Fuente del Cristo is named after an old wayside cross of which it formed part. After Barrio de Abajo, there is a washhouse on the right side of the path.

The historical evidence is thus distributed among buildings in the village and elements along the paths. The church brings together the construction period, baptismal font, coffered ceiling and altarpieces; the humilladero, Fuente del Cristo and washhouse, by contrast, are connected with the history of the paths and earlier movements through Correpoco.
