Puente Pumar – Church, Manor Houses and Trails

Puente Pumar preserves one of the best-preserved historic centres in Polaciones, as well as the most complete ensemble of civil architecture in the Polaciones valley. The village lies at the upper end of the Embalse de la Cohilla reservoir.

Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Natividad was rebuilt between 1764 and 1781 on the ruins of the original temple. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, with a semicircular vault over the crossing.

The Casa del Arzobispo, also known as Casa de la Coronela, is an 18th-century manor house behind the church of Puente Pumar. Its ashlar façade features three round arches on the lower floor and, above them, three so-called pulpit balconies.

The restored Casa del Arzobispo serves as the visitor centre of the Saja-Nansa Ecomuseum.

The Casa de los Coroneles Superior is a large 18th-century manor house with agricultural outbuildings and two monumental entrance gates. Below the Casa de los Coroneles Superior lies the Casa de los Coroneles Intermedia, an 18th-century manor house with two simple porticoes featuring basket-handle arches.

The traditional houses of Puente Pumar combine limestone with oak or chestnut wood in characteristic solanas. The Fábrica de luz de Puente Pumar was a mill until 1930 and subsequently generated electricity for Puente Pumar and other villages in Polaciones.

For further village discoveries, Argüébanes, Abaño, Corvera, Villanueva, Ongayo, Rábago, Samano and Somahoz are also available.

Nature

The ZEPA Sierras del Cordel y Cabeceras del Saja y Nansa is a 16,244-hectare Natura 2000 protected area in the central-western mountains of Cantabria. In the Nansa Valley, it includes areas of Polaciones and Tudanca.

Stage 01 of the “Los Pueblos de Polaciones” route begins in La Laguna, approximately 500 metres from Puente Pumar. The Camino del Potro also begins in La Laguna, approximately 500 metres from Puente Pumar.

The Camino Histórico del Cantábrico a Castilla crosses the old stone bridge of Puente Pumar and leaves the village southwards towards Lombraña and Tresabuela.
