Culture and History
The Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueología has two permanent exhibition circuits: one dedicated to the natural sciences and one to archaeology. The Casa del Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife opened in 2017 to document and present the city's carnival festival throughout the year. It displays symbolic elements of the carnival, including imaginative costumes worn by the groups and dresses worn by the carnival queens.
The Iglesia Matriz de la Concepción is an example of Canarian Baroque architecture; its tower was built in 1786. The Auditorio de Tenerife is an impressive building designed by architect Santiago Calatrava in the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the Atlantic coast.
The Castillo de San Juan Bautista, popularly known as Castillo Negro, is a round coastal fort from the first half of the 17th century and is considered Spanish historical heritage.
Parque García Sanabria contains many artistically valuable sculptures, including some from the I Exposición Internacional de Esculturas en la Calle. The Centro de Interpretación de Escultura en la Calle is located next to the Reloj de Flores in Parque García Sanabria.
Nature and Landscape
Parque Rural de Anaga extends across Santa Cruz de Tenerife and is one of the municipality's most important recreational areas. At the same time, Parque Rural de Anaga is a biosphere reserve with species-rich flora and fauna characterised by endemic species.
The El Pijaral Integral Nature Reserve comprises laurel forest, endangered endemic pigeons and the rock formations Roques de Anambro and Chinobre. Prior authorisation is required to access the El Pijaral hiking trail.
More than 2,000 plant species from tropical and subtropical climate zones grow in the Palmetum, including more than 500 palm species. The site offers views of the sea and the city as well as waterfalls, lakes and streams. In the city of Santa Cruz, the Palmetum is considered the best place for birdwatching.
Hiking
The PR-TF 2 hiking trail connects the hamlet of Taborno with the Valleseco neighbourhood on the city's coast and passes through fayal-brezal ecosystems and old hamlets. The PR-TF 8 circular hike takes approximately seven hours and is of moderate difficulty; it leads through Afur, Taganana and the Barranco de Tamadite.
The Camino de las Vueltas leads to Taganana along a partially preserved original paved path, where traditional house architecture stands out.
City and Coast
Tenerife's tram operates two lines and connects important destinations in the metropolitan area between Santa Cruz and La Laguna. The historic centre of Santa Cruz de Tenerife forms a triangle bounded by Calle de La Noria and the squares España, Candelaria and Weyler.
Playa de Las Teresitas belongs to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and is located in the town of San Andrés. Thanks to the installed breakwaters, it has calm surf. There are showers, supervision and step-free access with reduced barriers directly at the beach.
Parque Marítimo César Manrique is a 22,000-square-metre leisure complex with swimming pools.
