Garafía – Rock Art, Pine Forest and Starry Sky
The Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos is located within the municipality of Garafía at an altitude of 2,396 metres and houses one of the most complete telescope facilities in the world. From Roque de Los Muchachos, the Milky Way can be observed with the naked eye.

Culture and History
The church in Santo Domingo was built in the 16th century and acquired its characteristic division into two naves in the following century.
The archaeological ensemble of La Zarza was designated a Cultural Heritage Site of Special Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) on 4 April 1995; shortly afterwards, an archaeological park and an on-site museum were established there.
The archaeological ensemble of La Zarza comprises shepherd settlements, rock shelters and rock overhangs used seasonally. The Parque Cultural La Zarza includes one of La Palma’s largest rock art complexes, with 29 engraved panels.
Landscape and Trails
Tablado is a protected landscape between the Los Hombres and Fagundo ravines and an example of the island’s rural architecture. The GR 130 hiking trail runs through it.
The hiking trail from Las Tricias to the Dragos de Buraca passes through an area with traditional Canarian architecture and the island’s highest concentration of dragon trees. The Las Tricias–Buracas route passes through traditional rural landscapes and the deep Gallegos ravine.
Montaña de La Centinela offers panoramic views over the La Luz ravine. Access to Juan Adalid requires a four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle; descending on foot is considered the more recommended option. In summer, Playa del Callejoncito has a thin layer of black sand.
Traditions and Local Products
The festival in honour of San Antonio del Monte, the patron saint of Garafía, and San Isidro Labrador features the island’s most important livestock fair. It is an annual meeting place for residents from across the island, returning emigrants and visitors.
The cheeses characteristic of Garafía are predominantly goat cheeses; the varieties also include smoked and matured cheeses.
A summer edition of the Mercadillo de la Villa de Garafía was scheduled for 1 August at the Centro de Promoción Agraria de San Antonio del Monte from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It was to include local products, artisanally produced cheese, baked goods and handicrafts, among other offerings.
