Culture and History
The founding district of El Charco features a historically and artistically significant ensemble of manor houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Los Lavaderos were relocated to El Charco; alongside old aqueducts are the new washing places, built and restored in the mid-20th century. In accordance with the irrigation schedule, water arrived only every 15 days and then continued flowing to the banana plantations.
The Museo del Plátano opened in 2004 in a two-storey Canarian house and provides information about the origin, cultivation and export of bananas. Its historical collection of agricultural equipment includes Tazacorte’s first Sulfatadora, the oldest bronze pest-control sprayer in the Canary Islands, as well as the roll of paper used to wrap banana plants.
The Hacienda de Abajo was dedicated to sugar-cane cultivation and became La Palma’s richest and most important estate. Its owner, Jácome de Monteverde, generated high profits from the sugar trade with Antwerp from 1513 onwards; the continuous trading activity explains La Palma’s significant Flemish art collection.
The tradition of Los Caballos Fufos has been maintained in the Villa y Puerto de Tazacorte for more than a hundred years during the September celebrations in honour of San Miguel and originated in Cuban carnivals.
Coast and Harbour
Playa Puerto de Tazacorte is a black-sand beach with calm waters; a breakwater reduces sea currents and waves. The beach area also includes a promenade, a bus stop and parking areas.
Marina Puerto de Tazacorte has 341 berths for boats up to 20 metres long and with a draught of up to three metres. It also has a diving centre; boat trips can be booked at the quay.
Some restaurants in Puerto de Tazacorte serve dishes featuring Peto, Albacora, Vieja or Alfonsiño.

Nature and Trails
The protected landscape area Paisaje Protegido del Barranco de Las Angustias is protected because of its geological and geomorphological significance as well as its rugged ravine character. It encompasses representative geological structures and populations of endangered plant and animal species.
The first stage of the GR 131 runs from Puerto de Tazacorte to Roque de los Muchachos; it is 16.90 kilometres long, classified as extremely difficult, and passes through the Paisaje Protegido del Barranco de Las Angustias and the Parque Nacional de La Caldera de Taburiente.
