Puntagorda between the Coast, Almond Tradition and Hiking Trails

Puntagorda combines steep ravines, sweeping views and traditional rural architecture. Growing almonds is a traditional agricultural activity here: the climate influenced by the sea and the diverse microclimates created by the mountainous terrain favour it; mainly local varieties such as almendra gorda, almendra comuna and almendra larga are grown.

Hiking and Trails

The trail network comprises seven restored and hiking-ready routes covering a total of 60 km. The Camino de Gutiérrez (SL LP 62) is 3.4 km long and runs along the northern coast of the municipality of Puntagorda. The Camino de las Fuentes (SL LP 64) covers 8.9 km from Pino de La Virgen to La Montaña de Arco and visits eight springs. At the Barranco de San Mauro, the route leads to the Fuente de Los Medios; several basins carved into the ravine wall were connected by a channel cut into the terrain to a building formerly used as a storage facility or cistern. The different route lengths and themes can be weighed against one another when planning your day.

Nature and Coast

Around the mouth of the Barranco de Izcagua are cliffs protected as the natural monument Monument Natural de la Costa de Hiscacaguán. The Barranco de Izcagua divides the municipalities of Puntagorda and Garafía; endangered and protected plant species live in the cliffs.

The Puerto natural de Puntagorda is a natural area with two swimming pools and designated bathing areas. The Mirador Astronómico de Puntagorda enables educational observation of the night sky and has information panels, four rotating star charts and a marker pointing towards Polaris. The El Fayal recreational area offers picnic sites with barbecue facilities, water and freely and responsibly usable firewood, as well as a self-guided educational trail covering the area's most important natural and cultural features.

Culture and History

The Antiguo Templo de San Mauro Abad is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. The temple dates from the 16th century and combines Gothic and Mudéjar art; its pointed interior arch is considered a Gothic example on the islands. By car, it can be reached from the El Pino district via Calle del Cementerio; at La Charca, a turn-off to the right leads to the temple.

Two traditional windmills have been preserved in Puntagorda: one in El Roque and one in El Pinar near La Relvalarga. The second mill is currently being restored by its owners.

Festivals and Local Produce

The Fiesta del Almendro de Puntagorda has been officially designated Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Canarias. The Fiesta del Almendro en Flor takes place in the district of El Pinar, lasts three days and includes cultural and sporting activities for all age groups.

During the Sunday festival of the Fiesta del Almendro, visitors receive salted almonds and wine from the region and can sample other almond products. At the Sunday Musical Festival, folk groups, performers of punto cubano and mariachi groups take part; there are also poetry recitations, among other activities. The Mercadillo del Agricultor de Puntagorda offers direct sales from producer to consumer, featuring fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, honey, wine, traditional pastries and handcrafted goods.
