Barlovento on La Palma: Nature, Culture and Holiday Apartments

In Barlovento, the Mirador de La Tosca is located at an altitude of 700 metres. From here, there are views of the northern coastal cliffs and ancient dragon trees. The viewpoint is fully accessible and provides information in Braille, an information QR code and two designated parking spaces.

Nature

The Guelguén Special Nature Reserve covers 1,074.4 hectares in the municipalities of Garafía and Barlovento. It protects the laurel forest habitat, as well as its hydrological retention and recharge function.

The Barlovento Lagoon lies in a crater at an altitude of 650 metres, surrounded by a pine forest. The lagoon is home to endemic and protected bird species.

Fuente de Las Mimbreras is located in an area characterised by laurel forest and has a small recreational area with tables and barbecue facilities.

Water and Leisure

The natural pools of La Fajana form a bathing complex consisting of three pools that has preserved its natural coastal surroundings.

La Fajana offers parking, sun terraces, restaurants, and showers. The three pools are accessed via stairs, which are not recommended for people with reduced mobility.

The La Laguna recreational area offers a camping area, cabins, a children's playground and a multi-adventure course, and is located on the island's hiking trail network.

Culture

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was extended in 1678 and, at 35 metres, has the longest single-nave church building on the island.

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary houses a Flemish statue of Our Lady of the Rosary from the 16th century.

The theatrical re-enactment of the Battle of Lepanto in Barlovento is recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Ámbito Local category and takes place every three years.

The Sanmao literary viewpoint on the coast of Barlovento commemorates the writer Echo Chen and contains poems dedicated to her husband.

At the Las Mimbreras Craft Centre in La Laguna de Barlovento, wickerwork made from willow and other traditional handicrafts are displayed and offered for sale.

Market

The Barlovento agricultural and handicrafts market takes place on the second Sunday of every month and offers local produce, traditional products and tastings.

Getting There and Trails

Barlovento is connected by the LP-1 road and has taxi services as well as interurban bus connections to Santa Cruz de La Palma, San Andrés y Sauces and Garafía.
