Fuencaliente De La Palma: Volcanoes, Coast and Wine

Fuencaliente De La Palma combines volcanic landscapes with coastline, wine traditions and remarkable cultural sites. The Los Volcanes de Teneguía Natural Monument covers 457.4 hectares within the municipality of Fuencaliente. It includes volcanic cones and lava fields, including some formed by historic eruptions.

Nature and Coast

Echentive Beach was formed in 1971 following the eruption of the Teneguía volcano and is part of the Los Volcanes de Teneguía Natural Monument in the south of La Palma. Natural bathing pools make it possible to swim there even when the waves are stronger. The Fuencaliente Salt Pans are designated an area of scientific interest because they serve as a resting place for many migratory birds. White salt, black volcanic soil and the blue sea come together here to create a distinctive coastal landscape. Small salt crystals are collected and dried by hand; you can also buy Flor de Sal there.

Established in 2001, the La Palma Marine Reserve extends along a 15-kilometre stretch of coastline and reaches depths of more than 1,000 metres. La Zamora Beach is divided by a rock serving as a natural barrier into the areas of Zamora Grande and Zamora Chica. It is a black-sand beach particularly recommended for diving enthusiasts because of the depth of its waters. At high tide and in strong surf, surfers use the waves there.

Trails and Volcanoes

The Ruta de los Volcanes is 17.5 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 1,207 metres. The Fuencaliente Lighthouse is its endpoint. The route also ends in the village of Los Canarios, which is considered the centre of the municipality of Fuencaliente. Another hiking trail, SL FU 112, leads from Los Quemados to El Puertito in Fuencaliente. On the section towards the lighthouse, the Roque de Teneguía can be seen on the right; a series of pre-Hispanic Canarian rock carvings was found there.

The restored old Fuencaliente Lighthouse houses the Casa del Farero, which can be visited, at its base. Outside Los Canarios, on the road towards Las Indias, lies the visitor centre for the San Antonio volcano. It includes a guided trail across the volcanic cone. The Centro de Interpretación de los Volcanes in Fuencaliente also has a small dome for astronomical observations. This makes it possible to compare different routes, coastal locations and types of activity when planning your own day.

Views, Culture and Wine

The Mirador de Las Indias offers panoramic views of the south of La Palma, the coast, banana plantations and the island of El Hierro. The viewpoint also features a Décima by Miguel Martín Méndez and a sculpture by the artist Gustavo Díaz.

The Church of San Antonio Abad has been classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) since April 1996. Its history goes back to an old chapel dating from as early as 1522. Inside, the church preserves a ceiling decorated with frescoes by the painter Ubaldo Bordanova from 1904, as well as remarkable religious carvings and artworks. These include the Cristo del Entierro, the Calvary group, the Virgen del Carmen and two depictions of San Antonio Abad.

The recurring Fiestas de la Vendimia in Fuencaliente include a procession and the traditional Pasacalle featuring the dance of the Caballos Fuscos. The celebration was held in 2025 and 2026. Traditional local dishes and wine from the region are served on these occasions. The Jornadas de la Malvasía “La Viña y el Vino” took place for the fourth time in 2026. They included a guided tasting of dry and sweet Malvasía wines from various local wineries and vintages of the municipality, as well as an interpretive walk through the wine-growing landscape of Los Quemados.
