Las Indias on La Palma: Viewpoint, Landscape and Holiday Apartment

Culture

The Mirador de Las Indias features a décima by Miguel Martín Méndez, who was from Las Indias. The viewpoint also includes a sculpture by the artist Gustavo Díaz, who came from Fuencaliente. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora Madre de La Iglesia stands on a plot of land in Las Indias, has a square and follows a modern, functional design. It was built through monetary donations and the residents of Las Indias and Los Quemados contributing their personal labour. Historically, Las Indias was the last inhabited place from which people departed for America. The needs of the sick led to the establishment of a small neighbourhood called Las Indias.

Landscape

Las Indias lies on geologically older terrain at an altitude of 350 to 550 metres above sea level. The soils of Las Indias are characterised by vineyards and traditional fruit trees. In the area of the Barrio Las Indias, more recent lava flows created a large coastal platform called La Costa. The Mirador de Las Indias is located above the districts of Las Indias and La Fajana. From Las Indias, parts of the coast, particularly around the Roque and Punta de Los Guinchos, are inaccessible; at the same time, the area offers impressive views of the Atlantic.

Hiking and Leisure

Stage 3 of the Camino Natural GR-131 from Refugio de El Pilar to Faro de Fuencaliente runs along Las Indias Road (LP-209). The hiking route from Los Canarios to Playa de la Zamora Chica passes through the central districts of Los Canarios and Las Indias. It is 6.24 kilometres long, has 697 metres of cumulative descent and is considered a moderately difficult hike with a walking time of two hours in one direction. Organised or occasional leisure activities for the entire population take place at the Centro Cultural las Indias.
