Los Quemados – Volcanic Landscape, Viticulture and Culture
A viewpoint of the Teneguía volcano was established in Los Quemados along the Las Machuqueras–Los Quemados unpaved track. It has three benches and combines the striking view of the volcano with a specific location in the landscape.
Nature
The local SL FU 112 trail runs between El Puertito and Los Quemados. The protected volcanic landscape area associated with Los Quemados includes volcanic cones and volcanic malpaís landscapes, including some formed by historic eruptions. A natural monument associated with Los Quemados has the protection of its volcanic landscape as its designated conservation purpose. The trail designations help you distinguish a local hiking trail from a long-distance hiking route.
The terms are not interchangeable when classifying the landscape: volcanic landscape refers to the protected area, malpaís to the volcanic terrain mentioned within it, and the viewpoint marks a single viewing point along the track. This makes it possible to distinguish linguistically between the protected area, landform and viewpoint.
Culture and History
The tradition “Las viejas solteronas de los Quemados” originated in 1966 in the Los Quemados district of Fuencaliente. The Llanos Negros archaeological complex contains a Benahoarite settlement with six huts; it provides evidence of the settlement of this area by La Palma’s first inhabitants. The Viejas Solteronas dance performance was first presented at a carnival celebration. The dance performance features around ten women in costume. This means that customs, dance and archaeological traces each place different emphasis on the history of the village.
Wine
The Llanos Negros wine-growing area lies in Los Quemados (Fuencaliente de La Palma) and concentrates a large share of La Palma’s Malvasía cultivation. Llanos Negros is an agriculturally shaped landscape located on deposits from the 1677 eruption of the San Antonio volcano. In traditional vine training, the vines are trained in a forked form; varieties grown include Malvasía, Negramoll, Gual, Vijariego and Listán Blanco. The lapilli and ash soils of Llanos Negros form the natural foundation for the vines; their ability to create water reserves underground supports plant growth. The high solar radiation in Llanos Negros promotes the over-ripening of the grapes.
The connection between subsoil, vine training and grape varieties can be understood particularly clearly here because the landscape itself is described as an agriculturally shaped area. Lapilli and ash, forked vines and the variety of grape types mentioned belong to different levels of the same wine-growing area: soil, cultivation method and plant selection.
Getting Around
Bus route 23 runs between Los Canarios and the salt pans, passing through Los Quemados and Las Indias. You can also access Las Caletas as another page about a nearby locality. The GR 131 long-distance hiking route is called “Ruta de la Crestería–Ruta de Los Volcanes”. The two types of trail provide different geographical scales for your planning, without requiring you to commit to a single way of getting around.
