Cuerrias: Mountain Valley, Hiking Trails and Views

Cuerrias, also known as Les Cuerries de Maza, lies in a valley surrounded by mountain ranges. West of Infiesto, the Sierra de Ques forms a low mountain range; it separates the valley of the Piloña River from Cuerrias de Maza, a tributary.

Landscape and Village Character

The Cuesta de las Cabinas forest is designated as a forest of public utility and belongs to the village of Cuerries; its use benefits the residents of Cuerries. Examples of traditional architecture have been preserved in Cuerrias.

Hiking and Views

The “Ruta Sierra de Ques a Beroñes” route crosses the Sierra de Ques on forest tracks and offers views of Les Cuerries and the Cantabrian Mountains. On the Sierra de Ques, the trail runs almost level westwards; to the north, views extend across the Piloña valley and, in clear weather, as far as the sea.

The official route to Pico La Múa (PR-AS 46) begins in Frainoquiso and offers views of the Cuerrias valley. The return route of PR-AS 46 passes through mountain pastures and beech forests.

The route to Pico Múa begins in the small settlement of Cuerrias, also known as Les Cuerries, at an elevation of 437 m. Heading south, it follows a concrete track to Collado Llamío, called Rollamío on the IGN map, at 667 m. The route passes over Collada Incosa at 823 m and then continues along paths in a slightly northwesterly direction to the summit of Pico Múa at 987 m. From this point, an optional ascent to Pico Mayor, also known as Bierces, is possible and is described as easy.

The hiking trails therefore already differ in their starting points and routes: the Sierra de Ques route uses forest tracks and runs almost level along one section, while the route to Pico Múa climbs via a concrete track, paths and several named elevations. The views also have different focal points, ranging from the Piloña valley to the Cantabrian Mountains and, in clear weather, the sea.

For planning purposes, you can distinguish the options described by activity, surface, elevation profile and views. Those who prefer to sort by type of sport rather than by scenery can consider hiking and mountain biking separately; the surface and elevation profile remain neutral points of comparison.

Cycling

The moderately difficult mountain bike loop “Vuelta al Valle de Cuerries de Maza” runs along local roads, tracks and paths and descends to the village of Cuerrie via an old cart track. The different surfaces and the section on the old cart track give the loop a different character from the hiking trails described.

Getting There

Cuerrias can be reached via the PI-2 road. The Qués–Infiesto bus route lists two stops named Les Cuerries de Maza.
