Carreño: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
For almost his entire life, Carreño was the summer residence of Leopoldo Enrique García-Alas Ureña, known as “Clarín”, and inspired a considerable part of his literary work. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Carreño can consider the town as a specific travel destination.
Culture and History
The Ruta Clariniana consists of three sections: Doña Berta, 3.5 kilometres long; Viaje Redondo, 8.3 kilometres; and Boroña, 2.2 kilometres. It passes through landscapes featuring Romanesque churches, houses built by returning emigrants, paneras decorated in the Carreño style, the Quinta de Clarín, manor houses, palaces, medieval remains, mills and fountains.
A section of the Camino de Santiago through Carreño runs from the foothills of Monte Areo through the Carreño valley to Tamón, where it joins the French Way towards Avilés. The route offers views of hórreos and paneras painted in the Carreño style, watermills, manor houses and palaces. The Iglesia de Santa María de Llorgozana contains a pre-Romanesque Asturian window and a portal with geometric zigzag ornaments.
The Monte Areo megalithic tumulus necropolis is one of the most significant collections of burial mounds on the Asturian coast. It comprises more than 30 burial mounds distributed across the areas of Los Llanos and Les Huelgues de San Pablo. The necropolis can be visited free of charge and independently; a paved path leads to the upper platform of Monte Areo, where the megalithic structures are located.
The Museo Antón is dedicated to the sculptor Antonio Rodríguez García and to sculpture in all its forms of expression. It is housed in the 18th-century Estrada-Nora Villa and has outdoor sculptures in the surrounding garden.
Local Traditions
In Candás, the permanent exhibition on the canning industry is housed in the former cistern of the Bernardo Alfageme canning and cider factory. Using original pieces and models, it conveys the history of canning in the town and explains historical methods of preserving food, including cooling, curing or drying, as well as salting and pickling.
The Festival de la Sardina takes place every year on 1 August in Candás and is recognised as a festival of tourist interest by the Principality of Asturias. During the festival, sardines are grilled at stalls on the Paseo de San Antonio.
Coast and Trails
Playa de Xivares is visited by surfers all year round.
Los Pilares de Carreño rents out electric bicycles. This includes an approximately 15-kilometre circular route of little difficulty, leading to more than 24 tourist attractions in Carreño. Along the route, visitors can see more than 30 hórreos and paneras designed in the Carreño style, four historically significant churches, various fountains and traditional washhouses, as well as a 13th-century tower.
Nature
The route to the La Granda reservoir leads through an attractive natural landscape where the wildlife of Cabo Peñas, especially migratory birds, can be observed.
