Guimarán at Monte Areo

More than thirty dolmens are scattered across the plain known as Los Llanos on Monte Areo. Guimarán combines this archaeological trail with landscape, religious buildings and literary memories.

Archaeology and Landscape

The Monte Areo archaeological route includes the two designated burial mound fields of Cierru Los Llanos and Huelgües de San Pablo. It also includes the Los Bayos de Selmo wetland. The three natural viewpoints on Monte Areo are Peña Tocente o del Silencio, Peña´l Carro and Les Paseres del Visu. Peña Tocente o del Silencio is located above Villar de Guimarán.

The Monte Areo recreational area is located on Monte Areo, which is also called Monte San Pablo, in Guimarán, Carreño.

Culture and History

The Church of San Esteban de Guimarán has a rectangular floor plan and a square chancel; it is designed in the traditional Asturian style. San Esteban de Guimarán is considered one of the donations made by King Alfonso III and Queen Jimena to the Church of Oviedo.

Quinta Clarín is associated with Leopoldo Alas “Clarín”, who spent extended summer stays in Guimarán. In 1911, it was rebuilt by his son Adolfo on the foundations of the old manor house or palace of the Lords of Alas. The Palacio de los González Villar dates from the 17th century and has a chapel from the same period.

The square part of the building containing the main altar of the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is said to have come from the former, now destroyed, Chapel of San Pablo, which stood on Monte Areo in the district of the same name.

Trails and Walks

The Camino de Santiago runs from Poago in Gijón via the ancient Roman road at the foot of Monte Areo and down the Loma de San Pablo into the Carreño valley, passing through Cespedera and El Fondo. The Camín de les Muyeres de la Paxa ran at the foot of Monte Areo past the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios chapel or hermitage in El Fondo, Guimarán.

The Los Pilares de Carreño route starts at the Centro de Interpretación Rural (CIR) Guimarán-Valle and follows an approximately 15-kilometre, easy circular route to more than 24 tourist attractions in the municipality of Carreño. The Los Pilares de Carreño routes combine natural and cultural heritage with outdoor leisure activities and can be designed as family, cultural, literary or gastronomic walks. Another route, “Viaje Redondo”, runs through Logrezana and Guimarán.
