Dormon on the Coast – Greenway, Beaches and Holiday Apartment

A particularly distinctive feature of Dormon is the route of the Tranqueru Greenway: Via a detour, it reaches the rural district of Dormón, passes by the village, climbs the slope of Monte Morís and then descends to El Tranqueru Beach. The Greenway forms the Perlora–Xivares section of the E-9 coastal path. At 10.4 kilometres, it is classified as an easy circular route for families. Its length, circular format and classification provide different points of reference when comparing routes of varying extent or character.

Routes

The Tranqueru Greenway is accessible on foot or by bicycle and includes three tunnels, two of which are illuminated. It connects the Perlora holiday complex with Xivares Beach, passing through cliffs, coves and old railway tunnels. For part of its length, it follows the GR-204. Part of the route runs along Carreño’s former mining railway. Coastal formations, tunnels and historic routes can be considered as distinct themes when viewing the route.

Access from Dormón to El Tranqueru Beach follows a partially paved track to a parking area at cliff level. The route then follows the former Gijón–Candás railway line before a signposted and prepared descent leads to the beach. For planning purposes, this sequence can be divided into clearly distinguishable sections of the route.

Landscape

At El Tranqueru Beach, a continuous, high-quality outcrop of the Naranco Formation from the Middle Devonian is visible, assigned to the Eifelian through Givetian. El Tranqueru is also a natural beach with golden sand, surrounded by cliffs and located in an area of high landscape and ecological value. Geological classification, the beach setting and the coastal location come together here in a single landscape.

Carranques Beach is 220 metres long and has golden sand. It is connected to Xivares Beach by a coastal promenade; at Carranques, a ramp leads down to the sand. Along the Tranqueru Greenway, Madrebona is considered a quiet sandy beach. The different beach lengths, route connections and beach characteristics give you several specific points of comparison for a day on the coast.

Culture and History

Isla Entrellusa has a documented history as a whaling port dating back to 1232. At the northern end of a coastal headland between the coves of Madrebona, also known as Entrellusa, and Morís stands the Torre de Viade, Viao o Dormon. From El Castiello, the view extends along the Cantabrian coast from La Providencia near Gijón in the east to Cabo de Peñas in the west.
