Discover Las Cuerlas: Lagoon, History and Trails

Las Cuerlas lies within the catchment area of the Laguna de Gallocanta; the lagoon is two kilometres from the town. The protected Reserva Natural Dirigida de la Laguna de Gallocanta also includes the municipality of Las Cuerlas. Nature

In the area around Las Cuerlas, the PR-Z 33 Laguna de Gallocanta - Los Lagunazos is a 30.6-kilometre circular route that can be travelled by car, bicycle or on foot. Along the lagoon, this route provides access to six birdwatching sites. The Ermita de la Virgen del Carmen is set in a wooded area between Las Cuerlas and the lagoon. The route length, circular format and possible means of transport give trip planning different points of focus.

Culture and History

The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Las Cuerlas is a late Gothic church. It was built in the first half of the 16th century and has a central nave with side chapels. The town also preserves a house dating from 1777 with a balcony railing made of iron and wood.

The Peirón de Santo Domingo de Silos stands on the Camino de las Cruces. The route was formerly the connection to Yunta in neighbouring Guadalajara, and the peirón dates from 1894.

The Ermita de la Virgen del Carmen is an 18th-century Baroque building decorated with paintings of emblems from the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Peirón de la Virgen de Jaraba is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. It stands at the fork in the road to Daroca and Jaraba; the Ermita de San Pedro lies behind it.

The Torre de señorío, also locally known as Torraza and Casa de las Cantinas, is a large three-storey building whose façades retain their original design. The Torre de señorío dates from the 19th century. The hills of El Castillejo and San Pedro, which surround the present-day town of Las Cuerlas, preserve remains from the Celtiberian period. The town also contains medieval remains of structures, including a mill, a weir and a cistern.

On Whit Monday, Las Cuerlas celebrates the pilgrimage to the Virgen del Buen Acuerdo.

Trails and Landscape

The GR 24 passes through Las Cuerlas along the PR-Z 18 section. The GR 24 is an 80-kilometre route with nine stages from Aldehuela de Liestos to Peracense. The shorter circular route and the long-distance stage route offer different scales for planning days out and journeys.

Local Connection

In Campo de Daroca, the cooperative from Las Cuerlas is one of the cooperatives united in the Cooperativa Agraria La Cumaga. These cooperatives procure quality durum wheat for the Puccinella pasta brand.
