Culture and History

Alcalá de Moncayo was originally a Muslim fortification. After its conquest, the town belonged to Santa María de Veruela Monastery until the Desamortización de Mendizábal in 1835. The Muralla de Alcalá de Moncayo is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The surviving remains of the fortification include small fragments of wall and a tower with an old two-part window that may be Mozarabic.

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has a single nave, comprises three bays and features rib vaults. Its bell tower has a square lower section; the upper storeys are octagonal and topped in the Baroque style. The church houses a Romanesque representation of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus.

The Dances del Moncayo combine music, dance and dialogue with choreographies involving sticks, swords, bows and ribbons.
