Culture and History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Castillo in Aniñón is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. The 16th-century late Gothic church has a single-nave layout with four bays, chapels between the buttresses and a pentagonal apse. Its tower is older than the church and probably dates from the 14th century; its lower section has a minaret-like structure.

The Museo del Aceite is located in a former mill dating from 1934, which remained in operation until 1987. Visitors can learn about the olive oil production process there in an original mill. Guided tours of the Museo del Aceite are available, and olive oil from the “Santísimo Misterio” cooperative can be tasted in Aniñón. Thus, alongside the church building, mill technology and the local olive oil tradition are distinct cultural themes in the town.

The traditional Romería del Niño Jesús is celebrated in Aniñón on the second Saturday in May. The patron saint festivities in honour of the Santísimo Misterio take place on the third Sunday in September. Anyone who coordinates these two fixed dates with the other local visits can clearly place the cultural focus of the trip in its seasonal context.

Landscape and Trails

Aniñón lies at the foot of the Sierra de la Virgen and opposite the Sierra de Armantes. The route from Aniñón to Bijuesca forms part of the historic Camino de Santiago and leads via Cervera de la Cañada and Villarroya de la Sierra to Bijuesca. Another hiking route climbs to the Pantano del Niño Jesús reservoir, passes along paths between abandoned orchards and over mountain trails, and crosses the Barranco del Acuadron gorge.

The two routes described differ clearly in their course: the path to Bijuesca connects Aniñón with several other towns and the historic Camino de Santiago, while the route to the Pantano del Niño Jesús brings together orchards, mountain trails and the Barranco del Acuadron gorge. These specific landscape and trail connections give planning different focal points without conflating the two routes.
