Grisel between Castle, Sinkhole and Tradition

The Castillo de Grisel is documented as early as 1106. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument protection category and the Military category.

Culture and Architectural History

Its main façade preserves a battlemented parapet with narrow loopholes, an entrance with a pointed arch, and a door protected by a machicolation with three machicolations.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built of brick between 1549 and 1552. It has a single-nave layout with chapels, a star-shaped rib vault, and plaster busts depicting apostles and saints.

The independent architectural details include the roofs of the Casillas de Pico de Grisel: they display the characteristics of a true dome and thus differ from similar Mediterranean structures with false domes made of corbelled layers.

Nature and Terrain

Grisel lies in the northern Somontano of Moncayo at the foot of the eastern side of the Diezma, at an elevation of 625 m.

The Pozo de los Aines is a sinkhole formed by underground watercourses, with a diameter of 22 metres, a depth of 23 metres and up to 32 metres of elevation difference.

The moisture in the Pozo de los Aines enables numerous moisture-loving plants to grow, covering its walls and floor.

The site at the Pozo de los Aines, rehabilitated in 2013, has benches with tables, a fence, and a stone staircase with handrails leading to a viewpoint with panoramic views.

Paths and Local Traditions

A GR hiking trail leads from Plaza de Grisel along an ascending path to Alto de la Diezma and runs a few metres from the Mirador de la Diezma.

On 23 April, the San Jorge tradition in Grisel includes a pilgrimage to the chapel of Samangos, a return procession and the ceremonial greeting known as “cortesías” between the two processions.

The abandoned settlement of Samangos is located within the municipality of Grisel, and a chapel has been preserved there.

The Dance de Grisel is of the “pastorada” type and includes a Mayoral, a Rabadán, an angel, a devil, a Cipotegato and eight dancers known as Paloteadores.
