Discover Tarazona: Culture, Traditions and Holiday Apartments

Tarazona can be discovered through its distinctive buildings, local traditions and paths leading into the countryside. The Plaza de Toros Vieja is an octagonal complex of 32 houses arranged around a central square; since 2001, it has held the designation of “Bien de Interés Cultural” (Asset of Cultural Interest).

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena is the oldest surviving religious building in Tarazona. The Palacio Episcopal complex stands on the site of a former Muslim zuda, which temporarily served as a residence for the kings of Aragon. The Salón de los Obispos in the Palacio Episcopal contains a medieval room in the north tower dating from 1441, fitted with a Mudéjar coffered ceiling. On Calle del Conde, the houses were built using the battlement walkway of the fortifications of the Cinto district; their rear façades extend over Calle Judería.

Traditions and Theatre

During Cipotegato, the veiled, harlequin-like figure leaves Tarazona Town Hall at noon, makes its way through the crowd and runs through several streets while tomatoes are thrown. Holy Week in Tarazona was recognised in 2005 as a “Regional Festival of Tourist Interest”. A tradition in Tarazona takes place every year on 27 August.

The theatre building was completed in 1921 to a design by the architect Miguel Ángel Navarro and follows the traditional layout of an Italian theatre. The theatre building houses a permanent exhibition about the actor “Paco Martínez Soria”, who was born in Tarazona, with two halls, as well as a museum room about the artist Raquel Meller.

Trails and Countryside

The Vía Verde del Tarazonica has been developed for hiking and mountain biking (BTT). It follows a former railway line dating from 1885 that connected Tarazona with Tudela. It begins in Tarazona and runs towards Tudela parallel to the course of the Río Queiles.

The PR-Z 1 hiking trail runs through Tarazona as well as Santa Cruz de Moncayo, Grisel, Los Fayos and Torrellas. It begins in Tarazona; the first little more than two kilometres run through the municipal area. From Tarazona, its first section passes through a rural cultural landscape typical of the Moncayo area, with a mosaic of cereal fields and olive and almond groves.

Nature and Further Experiences

Interpretive guided nature visits are organised in Tarazona, including by the city council’s environmental department. The Kiborion experience includes a 30-minute tour through vaults and terraces, as well as the ascent to the drum, offering views of Tarazona and Moncayo.
