Murillo de Gállego: Churches, Río Gállego and Geology Park

Culture and History

The Church of El Salvador was built during the 11th century and consecrated in 1110. Built from ashlar stone, this parish church has a basilica-style layout with three naves and three apses, separated by columns attached to pilasters. At the highest point of Murillo de Gállego stands the medieval Church of Virgen de la Liena. A geology park has also been established where a small defensive fortress once stood.

The Church of Virgen de la Liena preserves a twin window with a double horseshoe arch, a long southern portico, distinctive Enmorillado flooring inside, and a unique collection of wall paintings transferred onto canvas. This church in Murillo de Gállego, dedicated to Virgen de la Liena, is also the origin of a depiction of the Virgin and Child dating from the late 12th or early 13th century.

Murillo de Gállego therefore brings together different historical impressions: El Salvador illustrates medieval church architecture through its layout and construction period, while Virgen de la Liena is defined by its location and preserved decorative details. The geology park complements this view of the town at a site that formerly served a defensive purpose.

Museum and Townscape

The Museo de la Electricidad is housed in Murillo de Gállego’s former grain mill and displays parts of the former hydroelectric power station of Murillo de Gállego. On the museum’s first floor, there is a scale model of the original dam. You can consider the architectural forms of the churches and the museum’s technical exhibits as two different areas of interest.

River and Landscape

On the Río Gállego, rafting involves an approximately 8 km descent in rafts accompanied by a guide; participants with no previous experience can also take part. Festivals Throughout the Year
