Discover Malón: Castle, Queiles and Trails

Malón begins with an unusual subject: the Museo del Agua is dedicated to the Queiles River. Visits can be guided or self-guided and are also open to the general public. In addition, Malón offers the opportunity to learn about traditional uses and systems for using the water of the Queiles. This connects the town’s association with water to a visit that can take different forms.

Culture

The Castillo de Malón is included in Aragón’s list of castles classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural. The grounds of the former Castillo de Malón are enclosed by a parapet designed as a crenellated wall. Its historical classification remains connected to the former condition of the Castillo. Thus, the current listing and the design of the former grounds exist side by side.

The Palacio de los Irazoqui is a three-storey mansion whose two lower floors are built of brick. The Palacio de los Irazoqui is a Baroque building dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It contains a Baroque skylight with a dome resting on pendentives. The Iglesia de San Vicente Mártir dates from the last quarter of the 16th century. In the Iglesia de San Vicente, ribbed star vaults rest on figurative corbels decorated with saints’ heads and heraldic motifs. The two buildings belong to different architectural and historical contexts.

Trails and Landscape

The Camino Perimetral is an approximately 3 km circular trail. The Vía Verde del Tarazonica follows the route of a former narrow-gauge railway, which opened in 1885 and was permanently closed on 31 December 1972. The Ruta Gastronómica por Tarazona, el Moncayo y Campo de Borja begins in Malón.

The trails therefore differ in their form, historical background and subject. Different route lengths, historical dates and themes create distinct focuses for each day, combining activity, culture and a regional route. For planning purposes, you can consider activity, history and regional cuisine as separate focuses. This makes it possible to organize the routes conceptually without mixing up their different themes.

The Mirador del Almacabe is located on the site of a former Muslim cemetery, whose excavations uncovered burial remains. The viewpoint offers views of Moncayo, Castile, La Rioja and Navarre.

Festivals

The main festivals in Malón are dedicated to Santa Cruz and take place from 14 to 18 September. In January, the Hoguera de San Antón is celebrated. The two dates mark different points in the annual calendar: the Santa Cruz festival takes place in September, while the Hoguera de San Antón is celebrated in January.
