Torrijo de la Cañada: Castle, Rock-Cut Wine Cellars and Hiking Trail

Torrijo de la Cañada stretches along both slopes of the valley crossed by the Manubles River. Between the castle, church, city wall gate and the wine cellars carved into the rock, the town offers various historical testimonies.

Landscape and Trails

The SL-Z-064 hiking trail connects Torrijo de la Cañada with the Ermita de Santa Bárbara and is 3.7 kilometres long. One route begins after a wooden bridge at the Pozo de la Losa on the edge of the built-up area of Torrijo de la Cañada. Culture and Architecture

The architectural heritage of Torrijo de la Cañada includes Mudéjar, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. The Castillo de Torrijo de la Cañada is protected as a BIC cultural heritage monument in the military category. It is located at the highest point of the town; the elongated structure, built from rammed earth, is approximately 40 metres long.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Hortal is a late Gothic church from the 15th century. Its central rectangular tower serves as the entrance to the church interior. The Casa Consistorial was built between 1582 and 1599 in the Renaissance style with Mudéjar elements.

The gate-tower structure of the city wall of Torrijo de la Cañada is made of stone and rammed earth, has a pointed arch and is crowned by two storeys with Renaissance brick arcades. It belonged to the now-vanished city wall and controlled access from the bridge over the Manubles River.

The Cruz del Arenal is a protected BIC cultural heritage monument in the religious category and is classified as a monumental cross. It stands in a square next to the main road through Torrijo de la Cañada, behind the town hall and the parish church.

Wine Cellars and Traditions

Around 400 wine cellars carved into the rock are located on the slope of Santa María Hill. The complex of cave wine cellars in Torrijo de la Cañada is an example of Aragón’s ethnological heritage.

The Birlas of Torrijo de la Cañada are among the variants of nine-pin bowling currently practised in Aragón. Holy Week in Torrijo de la Cañada was recognised as a Festival of Tourist Interest in Aragón in 1997.
