The Iglesia de Santa María in Ejea de los Caballeros is like a stone chronicle: the 12th-century Romanesque building has a pointed barrel vault and appears fortified.
Culture
The southern portal displays the Romanesque design with geometric and floral decorations on the archivolts and columns; a Christogram appears in the tympanum. By decree of 7 December 1983, the church was classified as a historic-artistic monument of national character; today, it is a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.
The Iglesia del Salvador was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries in the Late Romanesque style, with some Gothic and Renaissance elements. Its main altarpiece belongs to the International Gothic style with Hispano-Flemish influences; Blasco de Grañén began it in 1438, and Martín de Soria completed it in 1476. The two figurative portals are associated with the work of the “maestro de Agüero” and the “maestro de San Juan de la Peña,” respectively; the tympanum of the northern main portal depicts the Last Supper.
A guided tour of the old town lasting approximately one hour begins at the tourist office at Paseo del Muro No. 2, opposite the Iglesia del Salvador. The Aquagraria Museum explains the town’s historical relationship with water, agriculture and agricultural mechanization.
Events
Holy Week in Ejea de los Caballeros has been celebrated since the 16th century, is recognized as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Aragón and includes a competition featuring drums and large drums, a festival address and processions. Feriar Ejea is a market fair related to food and handicrafts, with workshops offered in parallel, mainly for children.
Nature
Punta de la Negra is considered the highest point of the Bardenas; the summit area offers views over the Cinco Villas plain. Los Humedales form a protected botanical and wildlife area with a lookout point for birdwatching. In the Bardena Negra area, there is a circular hiking trail approximately 10 kilometres long that is suitable as an introduction to the landscape.
When viewing historic buildings, you can pay attention to the interplay of the building structure, portal and iconographic program. The lookout point and circular hiking trail represent two different ways of experiencing the landscape. Culture, events and nature offer different priorities for personal planning.
