Discover Encinacorba: Culture and the Sierra de Algairén
In Encinacorba stands the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Mar, a Mudéjar church whose construction dates back to the first third of the 16th century. It is classified as a Bien Catalogado of Aragonese cultural heritage.
Culture
On a hill beside Encinacorba stands the Ermita de Santa Quiteria. It is one of the few examples of Early Gothic architecture in the province of Zaragoza and is classified as a Bien Catalogado of Aragonese cultural heritage.
The Castillo de Sinascueva consists of castle ruins from the 14th and 15th centuries, as well as a Mudéjar church on the hill above the town. Two square towers still stand at the castle; the larger measures seven metres per side and still has a pointed barrel vault. The Castillo de Sinascueva is protected as a monument under the Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) status.
Inside the Ermita de Santa Quiteria are a wooden pitched-roof structure with Gothic tracery and a raised choir. Encinacorba also has Renaissance-style buildings of the Aragonese type, made of brick and featuring three storeys, entrances beneath round arches framed with voussoirs, balconies on the main floor and arcaded galleries beneath the eaves; they feature heraldic decoration.
The 16th-century fountain is made of carefully dressed ashlar stone and bears an inscription with the year 1610. In Encinacorba there is a traditional dance play written in 1885 by the Piarist Dionisio Fierro Gasca, a theatrical representation of the arrival of the Virgen del Mar consisting of six dances. In recent years, La bajadica on the day of the Virgen del Mar, the town's patron saint, has become a regular feature.
