Alfajarín presents two clearly distinct sides: cultural and historical monuments, and landscapes featuring gypsum outcrops, steep slopes and escarpments.

Culture

The Torre e Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel Arcángel in Alfajarín is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC). La Portaza is likewise a building protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) and is classified as a fortified gate.

La Portaza is the only surviving part of Alfajarín’s walls. Its pointed brick arch has a double ring of arches and is connected to a short section of rubble-stone wall.

The Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña is a late Gothic building dating from the 16th century. It has a single-nave layout with three bays featuring star-ribbed vaults, as well as a polygonal apse. In this religious building, both the spatial arrangement and the vault construction are therefore central to the architectural analysis.

The Castillo de los Cornel is a building in Alfajarín protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC). It has an irregular, roughly pentagonal ground plan and a defensive moat protecting the entrance, which was accessible by a drawbridge and defended by two towers. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña is located near the Castillo de los Cornel. The castle is privately owned; compared with other Aragonese fortresses, visitor access is more limited.

Nature and Trails

Alfajarín is one of the municipalities included in the Reserva Natural Dirigida de los Sotos y Galachos del Ebro. A further landscape designation is provided by the ZEC Montes de Alfajarín, Saso de Osera.

This ZEC features plant communities on gypsum outcrops and gypsum soils, rock vegetation on the steep slopes, and fauna associated with the escarpments. The landscape features mentioned therefore range from the soils and outcrops to the steep slopes and the habitats associated with them.

Several agricultural tracks lead from the centre of Alfajarín into the Montes de Alfajarín, Saso de Osera, to the north, usually following gypsum ravines or cultivated vales.
